Position Summary:

The Peer Outreach Professional will assist the Youth Outreach Team (YOT) in their efforts to reach runaway, homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24 years old in the greater Chicago area. Collaborate with YOT in developing new methods for outreach.

 

General Purpose:

With leadership from Youth Outreach Professionals the Peer Outreach Professional will find, engage, and build relationships with youth who are experiencing homelessness or are precariously housed. Assist with referrals; serve as a liaison for partnered organizations. Connect with schools, teen centers, community businesses and other services where runaway and homeless youth frequently are located.

 

Role Qualifications:

  • Assist with planning and presenting outreach strategies and information regarding The Night Ministry's programming and resources.
  • Assist with street outreach activities and education, and promote services to homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-24 years of age.
  • Model and teach mature and responsible behavior.
  • Participate in training and education as required and provided by The Night Ministry.
  • Must work collegially with staff, volunteers, interns and community groups.
  • Build rapport with prospective participants.
  • Assist with data tracking and entry, reporting, maintain case notes and appropriate records and files.
  • Participate in team meeting and periodic training opportunities.
  • Must be trauma competent, LGBTQQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) competent, and street culture competent, and able to work with diverse populations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Accurate and timely data entry in external and internal data bases, i.e. Efforts to Outcomes (ETO).
  • Collaborate to create and maintain relationships with youth experiencing and at risk of homelessness. This may include participation in van based outreach, on foot outreach in a selected area, staffing of daytime or evening indoor drop-in programming, and presence at schools, youth centers, and other events or sites where youth are likely to congregate.
  • Contribute to periodic community needs assessments, including needs and skills of individual youth, and distribute supplies and referrals to services as needed.
  • Support and facilitate positive youth development with individual youth and the team's youth programming.
  • Help maintain and nurture relationships with community organizations and social service agencies.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  •  Comfort in exploring, developing and implementing new venues and methods of outreach.
  • Pass DCFS requirements, including Health Clearance and Criminal Background Check.
  • Physically able to be outdoors and/or mobile outdoors for as long as six consecutive hours at night in all varieties of Chicago weather.
  • Demonstrated "street smarts"
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

 

Reporting to This Position: None.

 

This is a part-time 6 month temporary role, which requires a minimum of 12 hours per week.

 

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; climb stairs; talk and hear; taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds and drive an automobile. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to be outdoors and outdoors for six consecutive hours in all varieties of Chicago weather.

 

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may significantly vary at the different locations required in this job.
