Department: Youth Programs, Supportive Services   Reports to: Manager, Supportive Services   

Position Summary: Hires, schedules, and supervises On-Call Youth Workers to ensure coverage at all residential sites; provides supervision and support to all youth worker staff to ensure smooth weekend operations of Youth Programs.

General Purpose: Promotes The Night Ministry's mission to aid homeless youth and their children by providing a safe and secure residence for them.

Role Qualifications:

  • Must be familiar with residential shelter operations
  • Must supervise, train, hire, and conduct reviews of On-Call Youth Worker staff
  • Must act as a representative of The Night Ministry at all times, and be an example to staff, residents, volunteers, and community members.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Co-Facilitates program supervisor meeting weekly with Youth Worker/Program Supervisors to solidify and review weekend scheduling, and program updates relevant for the weekend.
  • Exercise supervisory authority over part-time and full-time weekend staff (moving them between sites, coaching and advising work with youth, addressing professional conduct, etc.) though does not directly supervise or evaluate them. Provides feedback to appropriate direct supervisor as needed.
  • Responds to call-offs for second and third shifts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Fill these shifts with on-call staff or work the shift themselves if no on-call staff is available to work.
  • Responsible for contacting each program at the beginning of shift to assess census, staffing patterns, activities, and youth issues; may move staff from one program to another based on this assessment, or may determine at which program they will primarily station themselves that shift.
  • Must rotate between programs, visiting all programs over the course of scheduled shifts.
  • Facilitate On-Call staff team meetings monthly, rotating between mornings and evenings based on teams' availability.
  • Responsible, in partnership with the Data Manager, for data entry, tracking and reporting for program management and funding reports.
  • Track and monitor On-Call Youth Workers' attendance at mandatory meetings and completion of required training sessions.
  • Meet at least monthly with each direct report for direct supervision.
  • Approve time records of On-Call Youth Workers at least 48 hours prior to approval deadline, as set by the Finance Department.
  • Assure that case file documentation is completed by weekend Youth Workers correctly and completely; provide follow-up to correct errors or missing information in case files or other documentation within seven days.
  • Attend all Youth Programs and TNM required meetings.
  • Occasionally drive Night Ministry vehicles and transport shelter residents and their children as needed. Ensure that weekend Youth Workers consistently and fairly implement Youth Program rules and Night Ministry policy.
  • Represent The Night Ministry through networking, speaking engagements and other community events.
  • According to The Night Ministry's policies, this position is expected to carry a cell phone and is eligible for partial reimbursement of monthly cell phone bills.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Essentials skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in social service or related field, or significant related work experience.
  • A minimum of five years demonstrated experience working successfully with at-risk youth, or experience working in a residential facility.
  • Three years' previous supervisory experience
  • Ability to respond to emergencies calmly and appropriately, in compliance with Night Ministry policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, including some weekday duties to assure supervision of all direct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must pass DCFS background check, which includes a criminal background check.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance are required. Willingness to drive 15-passenger van or learn.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills.

Nonessential skills and experience:

  • Master's degree in social services field.

Reporting to this position: On-Call Youth Workers


  • Friday-Saturday-Sunday Noon-10pm or 2pm to Midnight. 5-10 additional hours during the week for supervision, team meetings, etc., for a total of 35-40 hours.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may vary at the different locations required in this job.
