Department: Volunteering, Community and Congregational Relations (VCCR)


Reports to: VCCR Manager


Position Summary: Establishes, coordinates and sustains relationships with faith-based and community organizations through a variety of programs and projects.


General Purpose: Promotes the mission of The Night Ministry through involvement of community and faith-based groups and organizations.


Role Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting outreach to and recruiting group volunteers
  • Must possess outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Must demonstrate significant success working with diverse cultural and faith-based groups


Position Responsibilities:

  • Build, maintain and deepen community, congregational and faith-based relationships in Chicago and the metropolitan region.
  • Represent The Night Ministry at congregational services and events, clergy associations, denominational meetings, faith-based advocacy groups, and volunteer/service/mission fairs
  • Schedule, conduct and track Night Walk educational immersion experiences for students
  • Schedule, manage and track meals prepared and served by volunteers at outreach sites and in shelters
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of significant contacts, group volunteer service projects, and related information. Develop and execute a regular recognition plan for participating service groups
  • Spearhead the Holiday Celebration project. Manage inquiries, coordinate gift needs of direct-service programs, organize volunteer support, send thank-you letters, and related duties
  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator with recruitment, retention, and recognition strategies and activities
  • Provide public education on The Night Ministry's mission, advocacy, and direct service work. Develop, implement and evaluate occasional special events
  • Maintain familiarity with agency's target populations and communities served using current literature and available resources
  • Attend staff, agency, and inter-agency meetings, trainings and seminars as assigned; participate in the agency's public relations and fund-raising activities as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • According to The Night Ministry's policies, this position is expected to carry a cell phone and is eligible for partial reimbursement of monthly cell phone bills.


Essentials skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Demonstrated success and comfort working with diverse populations, cultural and faith traditions
  • Two years' experience in related position
  • Outstanding interpersonal, writing and oral skills
  • Access to reliable personal transportation, current driver's license, good driving record, and evidence of insurability
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and the days leading up-to Christmas Eve (may include up to three Sundays every month)
  • Must be comfortable and effective speaking publicly
  • Creative, detail-oriented team player and self-starter who can multi-task
  • Thorough knowledge and fluency in Microsoft Office and internet
  • Able to make frequent local travel, and some travel within Illinois


Nonessential skills and experience:

  • Graduate degree in Theology or Divinity
  • Familiarity with Chicago-area faith-based community
