Department: Outreach & Health Ministry (OHM)       

Reports to: Community Health Manager                         

Position Summary: Provide health care, education and prevention services on Outreach bus and in other outreach settings. Various positions are available to cover a variety of locations:  Health Outreach Bus, Partner Sites, and the Street Medicine program.

General Purpose:  Support the mission and goals of The Night Ministry by offering hospitality, health education and assessments, counseling, medical treatment, and providing referrals for further appropriate treatment to persons experiencing homelessness and any person without access to adequate health care.

Role Qualifications:

  • Must possess M.S.N. degree and current Advanced Practice Nursing License.

  • Must have current driver's license and possess evidence of insurability.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct basic physical assessments.

  • Administer confidential STD testing and counseling.

  • Ability to work closely and in conjunction with other staff members and volunteers.

  • Offer referrals for health care, including updating and managing list of referrals.

  • Maintain documentation of health-related activities and other services provided, as required by funding or accrediting sources.

  • Order medical supplies and manage storage and inventory of supplies.

  • Create relationships with local nursing and medical schools to facilitate learning experiences within the program.

  • Participate in internal and external trainings as required.

  • Able and willing to travel to other outreach settings, such as agency program shelters.

  • Attend all department, agency and inter-agency meetings as required.

  • Be available as a listening ear and resource to people who visit programs; establish relationships and build rapport in a non-judgmental way; employ motivational interviewing and harm reduction methods to engage visitors in services available and offer referrals for social services.

  • Must be trauma competent, LGBTQQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) competent, and street culture competent, and able to work with diverse populations.

  • Keep up-to-date with the issues related to the target population, including current literature, available resources, and street dynamics.

  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

  • According to The Night Ministry's policies, full-time position is expected to carry a cell phone and is eligible for partial reimbursement of monthly cell phone bills.

 Essentials skills and experience:

  • Minimum 5 years' nursing experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in counseling patients/clients.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations; demonstrated "street smarts"

  • Physically able and willing to work in various settings, including outdoors; this position requires riding the Health Outreach Bus for Bus shifts.

  • Familiarity with referral sources.

  • Current driver's license and good driving record; access to reliable transportation.

Nonessential skills and experience:

  • Spanish language skills.

  • Experience working with underserved and/or homeless populations.

No direct reports.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may vary at the different locations required in this job.

  •  Compensation: position offers an hourly base salary with benefits package. Eligible for Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program.
