Department: Open Door Shelter – West Town – YOT

Reports to: Youth Outreach Manager

Position Summary: Through outreach, offer services that include, but are not limited to: crisis intervention, skills and needs assessments, counseling, Harm reduction Education, HIV/STD education, prevention and testing, and other direct services to youth as needed, specifically targeting youth aged 12-24.

General Purpose: Provide prevention and support for youth who are homeless or precariously housed in The Night Ministry's street communities and indoor venues.

Role Qualifications:
Must establish and maintain a visible presence and relationships with youth by regularly staffing programs in a targeted area or areas.
Must conduct assessments and provide services and referrals.
Must work collegially with staff, volunteers, interns, and community groups.
Must be trauma competent, LGTBQQIA competent, and street culture competent.
Position Responsibilities:
Collaborate and create and maintain relationships with homeless youth, especially those ages 12-24, through outreach. This may include participation in van based outreach, on foot outreach in a targeted area, staffing of daytime or evening indoor drop-in programming, and presence at schools, youth centers, and other events or sites where youth are likely to congregate.
Contribute to periodic community needs assessments, including needs and skills of individual youth, and distribute supplies and referrals to services as needed.
Support and facilitate positive youth development with individual youth and the Team's youth programming.
Help maintain and nurture relationships with community organizations and social service agencies.
Help represent The Night Ministry and its client population through advocacy with other organizations, congregations and community groups, participate in the agency's public relations and fund raising activities as assigned, and encourage community involvement in addressing the needs of homeless youth.
Accurately and consistently document program activities in accordance with The Night Ministry policies and procedures and the requirements of funding resources.
Maintain a familiarity with the issues related to the target population, including current literature, available resources, and street dynamics.
Attend trainings as available.
Attend staff, agency, and inter-agency meetings.
Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:
Bachelor degree in Social Services or Ministry or related field, and/or significant experience serving at risk youth required; Masters degree preferred.
Pass DCFS requirements, including Health Clearance and Criminal Background Check.
Current driver's license; evidence of insurability; ability to drive a 23 foot outreach van.
Physically able to stand or walk outdoors for as long as six consecutive hours at night in all varieties of Chicago weather.
Demonstrated "street smarts" for personal safety.
Excellent interpersonal skills.

Nonessential Skills and Experience:
Spanish language skills.

Employee must be able to stand for six consecutive hours outdoors in all varieties of Chicago weather.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may significantly vary at the different locations required in this job.
